How to Determine Your Skin Type
The best way to determine your skin type is to consult a dermatologist or aesthetician. They can help you identify your skin type and recommend the best products and treatments for your skin. Additionally, you can do a simple test at home to determine your skin type. Start by washing your face with a gentle cleanser and patting it dry. Wait an hour and then observe your skin. If it feels tight and looks dry, you likely have dry skin. If it feels oily and looks shiny, you likely have oily skin. If it feels balanced and looks neither too dry nor too oily, you likely have normal or combination skin.
I was always confused with my skin type. I can’t figure out which skin type I have and used to buy numerable brightening serum, gels, lotion, night cream without knowing my skin type.
I guess many people face this problem because even I was the one.The one mistake we all do with our skin is — we buy similar products that are working best for our friends or our mom. We feel that the same products will do magic on our skin but we don’t realize that we all have a different skin type.
Everyone wants youthful and radiant skin but don’t fall into a trap to buy the wrong products. Instead, know your skin type before and then buy products accordingly.
How to know your skin type?
As I was facing the same problem, one of my friend who is a skin specialist suggested me to try these two methods to know which skin type I have. Try any one of them and know your skin type. If you don’t get the results by first then try the second one. Before we go to methods be familiar with the different skin types you have:
1.Oily Skin:
It means your face produces excess oil and it becomes shiny and greasy. You can see enlarged pores on your nose, skin, and forehead. Blackheads and acne become common to your skin.
2. Dry Skin:
Dry skin has a rough texture and at times it causes irritation because of the tightness of the skin. It sometimes causes itching due to flaky skin.
3. Normal Skin:
Normal skin is perfect and it means your skin has a balanced blood circulation. Your skin is neither dry and nor oily.
4. Combination Skin:
It means you have oily skin near the forehead, nose, and chin and dry skin near your cheeks. It’s a mixture of both dry and oily skin.
5. Sensitive Skin:
If your skin reacts when you apply new products then you may have sensitive skin. You will feel itchiness and it becomes prone to acne and skin burn when you apply a new product.
First Method:
Blotting paper or tissue paper test
- Wash your face very well or use a soap-free cleanser to wash it.
- Sit in a non-air-conditioned room and don’t apply any skincare product for an hour.
- After an hour, put blotting paper or tissue paper on different areas of the face like — cheeks, chin, nose, forehead.
Now, understand that every face has two zones T-zone and C-zone.
T-zone: It consists of the — forehead, nose, chin and it also includes a little part of cheeks just beside the nose. It is called T-zone because it is shaped like the letter ‘T’.
C-zone: It consists of the more lateral part of the cheek along the jawline and chin. After one hour notices these changes:
Normal Skin:
If the tissue paper falls from the skin after a few seconds, it means it does not stick to your face and there is no trace of oil on the tissue paper.
Combination skin:
If there is oil on T-zone and C- zone is dry. This means tissue paper stick on T-zone
Oily Skin:
It means T-zone and C- zone both have traces of oil on tissue paper and tissue paper sticks on both the zones.
Dry Skin:
Your skin feels stretchy after doing a tissue paper test and all tissue paper falls off.
Sensitive Skin:
If your skin feels red and itchy even after washing your face in an hour.
Second method:
Look in the mirror and at your pores
- Previous night wash your face very well and do not use and skincare products or night care products.
- Go to bed without any artificial air conditioning.
- Wake up in the morning and touch your skin or look in the mirror and visualize your skin.
Notice the following changes:
Normal Skin:
If your skin looks fresh and well-rested which gives you a smooth texture then it’s normal skin.
Oily Skin:
Center zone or a T-zone has wide-open pores and does not look fresh, looks a little darker than before, and looks tired than you know its an oily skin or probably you can get acne.
Combination Skin:
If the T-zone has more open pores and the C-zone is dry and stretchy then it is combination skin.
Sensitive Skin and Dry Skin:
If it feels little red or irritated in some areas then it’s dry or sensitive skin. And after splashing your first water on your face it burns and when you use your first-day cream it burns further than you have extremely dry skin, dehydrated and sensitive skin.
After figuring out which skin type you have, you need to understand that your skin type changes and it’s never permanent as there are various factors that affect your skin:
1.Seasonal Changes:
As it is winter right now, our skin gets dry if we don’t use moisturizer. So, we all need to keep in mind that based on the climate our skin gets affected. If it is summer then it becomes oily and in winter it is dry.
2. Exposure to pollution and dust:
If you are going out in the surrounding more than your skin may get dry and flaky. So, always protect your skin with good sun protection moisturizer.
3. Intake of medications:
If you are taking some oral medications then it also affects your skin. Your health and the food you at are also the factors that affect your skin.
4. Growing Age:
It is also one of the ways your skin gets affected. As you grow older you get wrinkles and age spots.
5. Hormonal Changes:
We all go through different changes in our bodies. Everyone goes with some or other hormonal changes. So make sure you understand what your body is speaking.
These are the factors that affect your skin type. So, make sure you identify your skin type based on the seasons and changes of your body and do the skin test at home to know which skin type you have.
Final Thoughts:
Remember, your skin is not the same throughout the year. It keeps on changing so you might have to perform these tests many times in a year to know your skin type.
I have used this method and it really helps a lot because earlier whenever I used to go to the market to buy products. I was skeptical to buy which type of skin product but now as I am familiar with my skin type, it becomes easy to pick the products based on my skin type.
I hope this method will help you to choose the right product for your skin. So, you can make your skin healthy and radiant.
